McLuhan Winnipigeon Pilgrimage Bus Tour

The annual meeting of the Media Ecology Association will be held at U of Winnipeg on June 25–28, 2026. This year’s theme will be “Crossing [Out] Borders in our Global Village.” See the next event for contributions The Marshall McLuhan Initiative Inc. will be making to this convention.

In conjunction with this convention, The Initiative will be hosting a “Winnipigeon Pilgrimage Bus Tour” that will take participants around the city visiting key McLuhan sites.

Participants will be able to register for this tour as part of their conference registration. The cost for the excursion will be $25 USD.

Tentative Itinerary

1:00 p.m.

  • Pick-up by bus from the U of W (or a nearby designated hotel.) Alternatively, we may begin at 12:30 p.m. TBA.
  • 1:45 p.m

  • The painting by René Cera (personal friend of Marshall & Corinne McLuhan), in the Elizabeth Dafoe Library, U. of Manitoba Campus.
  • 2:15 p.m

  • The plaque in Marshall McLuhan Hall, University of Manitoba Students’ Union Building, U of M Campus.
  • 3:15 p.m.

  • The bronze bust of MM at the Winnipeg Citizens’ Hall of Fame at the Assiniboine Park (near The Leaf Botanical Garden
  • 4:15 p.m.

  • “The Medium is the Message” mural in the Atrium of the Princess Street Campus of Red River Polytech, 160 Princess Street
  • 5:15 p.m.

  • The Mural of McLuhan at Kelvin High School, 155 Kingsway.
  • 6:00 p.m.

  • Park the bus probably in the parking lot of Gladstone School, 500 Gertrude Avenue, across the street from the original home of Marshall McLuhan, 507 Gertrude Avenue.
  • 6:15 p.m.

  • Howard, as Executive Director of The Initiative, will give words of welcome and words of thanks.
  • Interested parties may walk 15 minutes to the Osborne Bridge to see the “McLuhan Lived Here” installation.
  • Cocktails, beverages, hors d’oeuvres, fancy sandwiches, desserts, etc. will be served to the guests, probably at Gladstone School. The idea will be that attendees will have enough food to constitute their supper.
  • Tours of 507 Gertrude in small groups, conditions permitting.  (e.g. Participants may have to wear hard hats. We will try to have as much of the house accessible as possible, given the fact that we don’t know at what stage the renovations will be at that time.)
  • 7:45 p.m.

  • Bus departs for the original meeting place.
